Saudi Arabia generates one of the highest amounts of electronic waste in the Arab States region, with more than 17 kg of e-waste per person each year, compared to the regional average of 6.6 kg. Addressing this challenge requires coordinated action, strong regulatory frameworks, and capacity development across all actors in the value chain.
To support these efforts, UNEP West Asia and UNITAR’s SCYCLE Programme jointly organized the first-ever E-Waste Academy in Saudi Arabia. The three-days training brought together 44 participants, of whom 70% represented the public sector, while 30% came from the private sector and regional or international organizations.
Comprehensive training programme
The Academy offered a broad curriculum tailored to the needs of emerging e-waste systems in the Kingdom. Key topics included:
- E-waste regulation and policy frameworks
- E-waste collection and environmentally sound treatment
- Transboundary movement of e-waste
- Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and financing mechanisms
- Quantification and monitoring of e-waste flows
Beyond expert lectures, participants engaged in case studies, hands-on exercises, and interactive sessions. Local stakeholders provided valuable insights into the current e-waste landscape in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A collaborative workshop enabled participants to develop initial project ideas to advance national e-waste management efforts.

Building momentum for systemic progress
Saudi Arabia has already taken important steps toward developing a comprehensive regulatory framework, along with improved collection and treatment systems. However, continued collaboration across the entire value chain will be essential for achieving long-term sustainability.
UNITAR SCYCLE’s e-waste trainings and academies aim to strengthen connections, build national and regional capacities, and create momentum to tackle the e-waste challenge. The success of the first Academy in Saudi Arabia marks a significant step forward in advancing sound e-waste management in the region.
